Policies & Dress Codes

Studio J Dance Academy is dedicated to providing students with an exemplary dance education in a safe and positive environment. All studio policies are in place to ensure that each student receives an equal opportunity at a quality and comprehensive education.

Parents/Guardians – please read-through the following policies with your student so they understand their responsibility at Studio J Dance Academy. We hope you enjoy the season and look forward to an exciting year!

Classroom Policy & Procedures

  • No student is allowed in the studio or classroom without an instructor present.
  • Students should respect instructors, staff, and classmates.
  • Students should help keep the studio workspace neat and tidy.
    • No hanging on the barres or touching the mirrors.
  • Students first and last names are to be marked on the inside of all shoes, dance bags, and other personal items.
    • Studio J Dance Academy is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Students should not wear dance shoes outside of the studio.
    • See dress code for complete list of appropriate dance footwear.
    • No street shoes are allowed on the dance floor.
  • Students should come to class fully prepared in the proper class attire.
    • See dress code for complete list of class attire.
  • No jewelry is allowed in class.
  • No food, drinks, candy, or gum is allowed in class.
    • Water breaks will be given at the teacher’s discretion, students may take a water break between classes.
  • Students should keep talking to a minimum during class time.
  • Instructors reserve the right to dismiss any student from class for continual disruption. If multiple instances occur a meeting will be held between the instructor, parent/guardian, and student.
  • No cell phones are allowed in class.
  • Students should use the restroom before class. Students may use the restroom during class at the discretion of the instructor.
    • Parents of students of ages 3-6 are encouraged to stay in the waiting area while class is being conducted for “emergency” bathroom situations.

Studio J Dance Academy offers classes that require physical activity with risk of injury. The studio and its instructors are not responsible for any injury occurring while attempting these activities. Studio J Dance Academy doesn’t carry medical insurance for its students, all students are required to be covered be their own family insurance policies.


Photo Policy
By registering with Studio J Dance Academy, you give permission for instructors and staff to take and publish photos of your child, in print or online, for promotional purposes. If you do not wish to have your child photographed, you must include a request in writing.


Attendance Policy

  • Students should arrive five (5) minutes prior to their scheduled class and should arrange to be picked up at the completion of class.
  • Studio J Dance Academy is not responsible for students once class concludes.
  • Students should stay in the studio until a parent/guardian is present.
  • A parent/guardian should notify the studio if they intend on being early or late for student drop-off and/or pick-up.
  • If a student will not be attending class, please notify the studio, by phone or email, 24-hours prior to the start of class.
  • Students are allowed three (3) unexcused class absences. (Unexcused is defined as not giving the studio the required prior notice.)
  • Students missing more than three (3) classes without notification are required to make up the time by scheduling a private with the instructor or by attending a similar class according to their level and age.
  • Classes missed due to inclement weather will be rescheduled.
  • Students who feel ill, have contagious symptoms, or have a prolonged fever should stay home from class.
    • Students should not return to class until they are fever-free for 24 hours.
  • Students who are unable to dance, but feel well enough to attend class, may participate by observing.
  • In the event of a prolonged absence please notify the studio.


Studio J Dance Academy recognizes that class attendance is a direct correlation to student success. Instructors will be responsible for maintaining accurate class records and attendance. Students who have perfect attendance will be recognized at the recital. Please make every effort to have your child in class.

Inclement Weather
Studio J Dance Academy follows the Montville school system with regards to studio closings and closings due to inclement weather. Please check the website or call the studio for information.

Class Observation
Parent/Guardian observation will take place two (2) times per school year. Each student will be allowed two (2) tickets. Observation dates will be announced at the beginning of the year. Photos and videos are permitted during this time.

Registration Policy
An annual, non-refundable, fee is required at registration. Fees are listed at $15.00 per new student and $10.00 per sibling. Once this fee is paid, and a parent/guardian has selected a payment plan for the year, registration is confirmed and the students place is held in the class.

Tuition Information

  • Tuition is broken down into 10 installments and billed on a month-to-month basis with statements sent via email. The first (1st) tuition payment is due on the first (1st) day of class.
  • Subsequent tuition will be due on the first (1st) of every month. There will be a $20.00 late fee for all tuition paid after the fifth (5th) of the month.
  • The last two (2) tuition payments are billed together and due by May 1st.

Payment Information

  • Payments that are paid in full by the first (1st) class will receive a 10% discount on their total tuition bill.
  • Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit card (Visa, Master Card, or Discover)
    • There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. After the second (2nd) returned check, checks will no longer be accepted.
  • A credit card is required to be kept on file, in addition to a pre-authorization contract, in the event that Studio J Dance Academy does not receive your payment by the applicable due date.
  • Parents/Guardians may opt for a monthly automatic payment that will be charged to their on-file credit card.
  • Tuition is based on a full season, which runs from September-June. Students with a remaining tuition balance will not be allowed to participate in the recital.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy

  • Withdrawals must be done in person at the studio office. No phone calls or messages through the teacher will be accepted.
  • If you choose to withdrawal from any class, for any reason, Studio J Dance Academy requires a 30-day written notice prior to your next tuition payment.
  • The payment that is due within the 30-days of your written withdrawal is still to be paid in full whether the student is in class or absent.
  • If a student withdrawals after February First (1st) the account on file will be charged for the remaining season’s tuition.
  • No refunds will be given for studio closings or missed classes.
  • Registration and tuition payments are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Costume Deposit & Fee
A recital costume deposit of $60.00 will be billed on November Fifteenth (15th) and are non-refundable. If there is a monetary difference in the amount of the deposit and the actual cost of the costume(s) your account will either be credited or charged. If there is a costume balance, the balance must be paid prior to receiving the costume.

Studio J Dance Academy holds an annual recital at the end of every season which all registered students participate in. If a student will not be participating in the recital, Studio J Dance Academy must have a written notice by November First (1st) in order to avoid costume charges. If the studio does not receive a written notice by November First (1st) your account will be charged for costumes. No student or class is permitted to perform chorography or use costumes in any venue before the recital.

Studio J Dance Academy is committed to protecting your privacy. As a general policy, no personal information is collected from visitors to this site and shared with third parties. Personal information that is collected when a visitor completes a form found on this site is for internal use only and used for communicating about our Studio J Dance Academy.

Pre-Ballet & Combination (Ages 3-6)
  • Solid Colored Leotard
  • Pink or White Colored Tights
  • Dance Skirt and/or Tutu (Optional)
  • Full-Sole Ballet Shoe (Pink Leather) with elastic
  • Tap or Jazz Shoes (If required)
    • Color to be set by instructor
  • Hair must be properly secured up in a bun or ponytail

Ballet (7+)

  • Solid Colored Leotard
  • Footed or Convertible Pink tights
  • Dance Skirt (Optional)
  • Split-Sole Ballet Shoe (Pink Leather)
  • Hair must be properly secured up in a bun or ponytail

Tap, Jazz, & Musical Theatre (All Ages) 

  • Leotard or Tank Top
  • Footless, Convertible, or Stirrup Tights (Tan or Black)
  • Dance Shorts or Pants
  • Split-Sole Jazz Shoes (Capezio or Bloch) without elastic
    • Color to be set by instructor
  • Split-Sole Tap Shoes (Capezio or Bloch) in Black
  • No street clothes (Baggy pants, jeans, t-shirts, or sweatshirts)
  • Hair must be properly secured up in a bun or ponytail

Lyrical, Contemporary, & Modern (All Ages)

  • Leotard or Tank Top
  • Footless, Convertible, or Stirrup Tights (Tan)
  • Barefoot or “Foot Undeez”
  • Dance Shorts or Pants
  • No street clothes (Baggy pants, jeans, t-shirts, or sweatshirts)
  • Hair must be properly secured up in a bun or ponytail

Hip-Hop (All Ages)

  • Comfortable and moveable fitted clothing
  • Clothes should not be revealing
  • Sneakers or Hip-Hop Shoes

Acro, SLT, & Conditioning (All Ages)

  • Leotard
  • Footless, Convertible, or Stirrup Tights (Tan)
  • Dance Shorts
  • Barefoot

Voice Privates (All Ages)

  • Comfortable and moveable fitted clothing
  • Clothes should not be revealing
  • Covered Feet – No flip-flops or sandals!

Dance Privates (All Ages)

  • Leotard or Tank Top
  • Footless, Convertible, or Stirrup Tights (Tan)
  • Dance Shorts or Pants
  • Appropriate Shoes (To be set by instructor)

Boys – Any Class/Private (All Ages)

  • Fitted T-Shirt
  • Athletic Shorts or Dance Pants
    • Shoes: Ballet (Black), Tap (Black), Jazz Shoes (Color to be set by instructor), Lyrical/Contemporary/Modern (Foot Undeez), and Hip-Hop (Sneakers)
